How Have You Taken One For The Team?
Here's a lighthearted example of mine: In high school, a gaggle of girls were smoking (pot, surely) in the parking lot across the street. Sister Regina called us all into the office the next day and asked which of us were smoking. If we didn't admit it, everyone's parents would be called. I was the only one to come forward and because I did, none of us got in trouble. I Took One for the Team.

For others, Taking One for the Team is far more serious.

Participate!
Send a voice recording (approximately 1 minute or shorter) telling us how you took one for the team.  Feel free to send a written description instead if you are shy or want to remain anonymous- I will be or find a stand in voice.
A storytelling structure you could follow:
  • Who are you? (Feel free to remain anonymous!)
  • Where were you? When?
  • What happened?
  • How did it make you feel?

"Taking One For The Team" Mind Map by Lexa Walsh

Inspiration and Process Images
Lexa's Artist Statement:
I make context-responsive projects, exhibitions and objects about power value. With a background in both sculpture and social practice, I create platforms for interaction across hierarchies, representing multiple voices and inventing new ways of belonging, not only for people, but also for collections and archives. These platforms often utilize existing forms such as the Table, the Community Cookbook, the Museum and its Pedestal, the Thrift Store, the Archive, the Collective Making of Song and Cheer, the Public Square, and more.

Currently the work is manifested as award forms such as trophies and medals made of ceramics, textiles and found objects along with sound. Through participation, the public may offer testimonials and dedications to share in an expanded notion of what and who may be celebrated, how and why.

Lexa's Project/Process:
Taking One For The Team is a large-scale installation of exuberant award forms and a participatory sound element. How have we taken one for the team? What does that term mean to us personally? Through these stories we will learn what this means collectively in our current climate, and offer some cheer in return. The first iteration of the project was realized at Still Life with Fruit Gallery, and had a collaborative component with artist Kale Roberts and their truck-as-curatorial platform Tailgate Projects.
