Dear Readers,
In my email no. 2, The Thing, I am pondering the legal term “material fact” through my lens as a non-native English speaker. I am a foreigner in an English speaking country, just as English words are foreign to my body. Every English word I pronounce reshapes the interior space of my mouth, from where I place my tongue to how I open my lips and how wide I open my jaw — it ultimately changes my body image. I offer an audio recording of me reading the cover letter in House Hunting to the city where my family nests. The English words reproduced by my tongue are not “native” but rather a negotiation.
