Tricia Townes' Project Statement: These paintings are part of a body of work exploring the idea of the garden as a place of emotional and spiritual refuge. Gardens represent the gardener’s idea of an Edenic, idealized landscape, a utopia that defies, tames, and civilizes nature. Often the ability to have a garden implies a sort of privilege—the ownership of enough land and leisure or means to maintain an artificial landscape on one level of society. On another level of society community gardens are a nutritional necessity for those who have food deserts in their neighborhoods. These paintings explore a large garden embodying the first type of that landscape. Other works of mine document a community garden I have helped to design based on sacred geometry, but those works are not included here.
Here I show three artworks from my Garden Tour series in various stages of completion. The pieces that you see are painted in acrylic on mylar. I took the in-progress shots for my own purposes, which mainly consist of determining what to focus on next as I paint.
